With the usual caveat that we all have different anatomies, here's my input:

1. I used a 1 7/8" base ring with a CB3000 that I thought was *just* too big. The 1 3/4" on the CB3K was too tight so when I ordered my jailbird I went halfway with 1 13/16" ring. It was *just* too tight so I went back to 1 7/8" which is fine.

2. The oval ring is potentially more comfortable. It's not a gimmick. Because the centre of the cage is above the centre of the base ring, it gives a more even gap around the sides and makes for a snugger fit. My experience is that it makes no difference to overall size. i.e. if you use a 1 3/4" round ring then a 1 3/4" oval will be correct. It also reduces the top to bottom dimension which makes it all a bit more secure.

Good news is that the ring diameter is the easiest for MM to change for you.

But do go ahead and email him with questions - he's very helpful.

If you are going to order an oval you order the same size ring. The area is the same; you are just filling it in a different way.

I tried the oval and it didn't work for me. I started to get discoloring after about 20 minutes. I tried the next size larger and then everything fell forward and was just too big. I ended up with a round ring that is the same size as the oval and have no problems. I hang low and this may be why. I think if you were high and tight the oval may be a more comfortable fit.

I had put this in a new topic before noticing this one. I have my own question about the MM Oval vs Round base ring, so I figured I'd quickly delete my new topic and post it here instead:

I recently ordered a Jail Bird from MM and I am very happy with the device and most of the dimensions. I am still adjusting to the 3/8" gap because this is smaller than I had been using with CB-6000, but I think that gap will feel fine after a little while.

The only thing I'm considering changing is the oval base ring to a round one. I ordered oval because it's been suggested that more people prefer oval, and that the difference is minor anyway. Still, I'm wondering if my experience is typical, or if my male package dimensions are just a bit more vertical than most:

When I wear the oval ring, it is tightest around the bottom and top (I can just barely slip a finger tip in at the bottom) and is looser at the sides. Come to think of it, I could also say the same for if I were to wear a round ring. So when I wear the oval ring, it likes to turn sideways so that the longer dimension is more up-down as opposed to side-side. I'm thinking of ordering a round ring, or even requesting an oval ring with the vertical direction being the longer of the two. The concern then would be that there's more room for me to slip out the top, but it seems that this would fit me better.

Have other people shared this experience?

I have a question for you Slinky.

Do you hang low or are you high-and-tight? I ask this because of my theory of why the oval didn't work for me as stated earlier in this thread.

Slinky,

I had the same issue. After ordering the oval side-side ring, I had the issue of slipping out on one side (too much room there) and extreme tightness at the bottom that was unbearable. So after emails with MM, they changed my oval side-side ring to be oval up-down, and for the normal $10 alteration fee. The ring fits MUCH better after that change. Ideally I wanted asked MM to create a small notch at the bottom, but that was not an option - he mentioned that he gets the rings circular from an outside source, and just heats to bend into oval.
