Hi all, I am a first time poster but have lurked here for quite a while. I appreciate the friendliness and great community that many of you contribute to.
I have had several cheap plastic and metal knockoffs and am now ready to order my first real Jailbird. However, I have a couple of questions. First here is what I believe I need.
I have decided on a ring size of 1 7/8". A gap of 3/8". A tube diameter of 1 5/8" (which is a tiny bit larger than I need but if I have a shorter cage then I think a little larger diameter is okay....technically I only measure 1.6").
My question comes in the cage length. After many days and many measurements I have determined that the length from the tip of my penis to the start of my scrotum sack (obviously the underside of my penis) is 4". I believe that the MM site says to measure this way. I also have a (fake) Curve, and two different metal ones. One is similar to a CB6000 and the other to a Jailbird. Since these devices are curved my assumption is that I should measure them along the centerline from tip to the end ring. If true then I believe the Curve to be about 4" long and the two metal ones are 3" and 2.5" (at the centerline). The 2.5 fits the best but is a tad too short. The 3" has a gap very often although that could partially be that the diameter towards the end gets narrow and thus my penis just prefers to scrunch up versus fill in the cage.)
Questions:
1) The MM site has you fill in cage length. Do they automatically subtract off the gap length or is this the proper cage length at the centerline?
2) Given the above data I am thinking of ordering a cage length of 2.75" based on the fact that I would like to have one that is just a little longer than the smallest metal one that I have. Does this seem reasonable considering a 3/8" gap and a flaccid (underside) penis length of 4".
Sorry for the length of post and thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.
Cage length of Jailbird question
Re: Cage length of Jailbird question
MM does not subtract for the gap. Their measurement instruction say, for cage length, to measure flaccid (not shriveled)as you did over a period of time, then subtract 1/4 in. That is for the gap. As far as cage length, if you generally have space in the 3.5 in cage, then I would suspect your 4 in avg flaccid measurement. They recommend erring on the short side.ximoosea wrote: Questions:

You will have erection attempts in the device and they have to go somewhere, so a little extra room in length or diameter is okay as long as you don't overdo it. Remember that the larger the cage diameter, the smaller the distance between the bottom of the cage and the bottom of the base ring. That's what grips your scrotum and holds the device in place. My Queen's Keep has about 1/4 in of extra space in cage length and about 1/4 in extra cage diameter space. If I could order again, I would eliminate 1/8 in of the extra diameter space for a perfect fit. Don't be bummed if you don't get it right the first time. I ended up selling my first MM device and ordering a second one. Once you get the right fit, you will be very pleased with their product.

Thanks for the input. I have actually been thinking about reducing the gap from 3/8 to 1/4 which would help with the distance at the bottom that you mention. I hang very low. Then again with the cage diameter and base ring diameter being so close I would assume the gap at the bottom is going to be pretty close anyway.
Thanks again for the response.

Re: Cage length of Jailbird question
Excellent advice, except that MM no longer recommends subtracting the 1/4". I wear a JB that fits like a glove; I did quite a few measurements per their current instructions, and ended up ordering a device with a length shorter than I'd initially anticipated, but turned out perfect. As Wishful4 recommends, err on the short side. You don't want 'growing room'. Except for attempted erections, I often forget I'm wearing the device...and even then the effect is generally pretty benign unless I've been teased and denied well beyond my normal frustration level.wishful4 wrote:MM does not subtract for the gap. Finally, I would email,or call, MM. They are extremely prompt with replies to any questions and offer superb service. They really care about customer satisfaction.

I recently posted about something I learned from MM regarding the gap measurement. it might be of interest to you. The link is: http://www.chastityforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58960

I did the same thing....occasionally had the smaller testicle slowly work its painful way through the 3/8" gap, so I wrapped the stud in heavy rawhide so it wouldn't be marred by the vice, used the flat of my hand to push the ring down, and made the first ring on the cage parallel to the basering, because it really measured more like 1/2" at the bottom. Cock and ball geometry and dimensions are more complicated than I'd ever anticipated.wishful4 wrote:ximoosea, ximoosea wrote:Thanks for the input. Kinda scary, because these things aren't exactly cheap. Stainless steel is fairly ductile, but I was worried that the weld might be brittle. Did a little bit at a time, periodically mounting the cage tube on the stud to check the gap. Do not use the cage tube and cage to exert force on the stud....you could distort the tube. I figured, worst case, I would 'fess up my sins regarding abusing a beautiful piece of metal artwork to William at MM, and he would make it right.
It worked great, though none of this really answers this gentleman's question about length measurement. I suggest he go short..because I don't think I've ever seen a posting on any MC website offering an MM device for resale because it was too short...it always seems that too long a device was ordered.
I'm getting windy here, but one other bit of advice related to my early experiences (and yours may differ) with a good fitting JB; despite what I'd read, noctural erections (morning wood, or whatever the fuck you want to call them), were surprisingly pain free, even though the device caused my glans and ballsac to be 'run up the flagpole'...I have no idea how testicles, who tend to retreat due to any sort of temperature or anticipated trauma, can allow distension that can only be described as obscene, without any pain.

Re: Cage length of Jailbird question
I found the recommendation concerning measurement on the MM website very reassuring: You can be a little off and it will still work just fine so don’t worry, just take a reasonable measurement when you’re at your smallest.
And this goes well with my own experience:
And this goes well with my own experience:
- My normal flaccid penis measures ca. 3 1/8 inch from tip to beginning of scrotum (measured many times over, to be sure).
- Subtracting 1/4 inch, I figured, I would need a 2 7/8 inch cage length.
- Finally, I bought a used JB here on the forum, whose length is 1/8 inch smaller (2 3/4)
- Result: While I was a tiny bit worried that the cage would be too short, it fits very nicely. Most of the time I am seeing my penis, it just touches the end of the tube or even has a little room left. Absolutely comfortable.
- That said, if I was to purchase another one, I would probably down-size the length by 1/8 or 1/4 inch.
