Earthquake in Japan, one year later

Post by Atone »

It has been almost a year since the earthquake / tsunami in Japan. The earthquake was on Mar 11, 2011. One of our members here, poinciana, lives in Mito, Japan. Mito was hit fairly hard as were the other areas around there.

Sadly, poinciana hasn't logged in to the forum since Mar 9, 2011, one year ago today. I just wanted to share that I think about him frequently and keep hoping that one day he will return.

Life can change fast, take count of your blessings today for you don't know what tomorrow will bring.

I've thought about him and his family, as well. I believe his wife was pregnant, or had recently had a child. I hope they were/are okay.

Mito City had buildings and roads collapse but the death toll there was quite low. Maybe two in the city. An old man and a 37 year old. Both Japanese. A couple more died from the tsunami in a nearby town but most of the destruction was farther north. Mito is also outside the evacuation area for Fukushima. I don't know poinciana but if he and his family were in Mito and aren't Japanese, they weren't killed.

A lot of gaijin (foreigners) left after the quake and some never came back. In Japanese slang, fly-jin.

It is certainly my hope that he (they) were not killed. I didn't know the death toll in Mito was that low, I know from the pictures there was a fair bit of destruction. Not sure where he worked. I am still hopeful that they are ok and some day he will return to this site. That is why I posted this (and previous messages) in the open area rather than the members only section. That way even if he is just browsing some day as a guest he will see this.

I believe that he was American but his wife was Japanese. I think she was pregnant and they had one child already.

Atone,

I think he was Australian, and as you said, his wife was Japanese.

I still think about poinciana and this tragic event every year. It is amazing how fast so many lives can be changed.
