Quick question about base ring size…

This is our second go round with chastity. I’ve been locked pretty constantly for just under 8 months.
Did about 4 months in Kink3D resin variation then swapped to a Ternence hinged base ring (45mm) which I wore for over 3 months.
I’ve been very comfortable in the hinge version but not going to lie, the hinge did irritate a little sometimes.
So recently purchased a couple of Ternence ones with a 45mm and a 40mm closed base ring.
The 45mm fits pretty well but does tend to slide down.
When I tried the 40mm it fit very well (the boys a normal color - not cool or blue at all) and held everything better.
But unfortunately, the nocturnal erection I had was rather painful which precipitated a middle of the night change back to the 45.
Seems it just gets too tight when hard.
I wish they had some middle of the road sizes between but they do not.

Any suggestions?

I think there are two options:

1) Wear the 45mm with a belt to keep it close to your body. They are available on Amazon and other sites.

2) Keep to the 40mm but get a smaller cage. If the nocturnal erections are too powerful it indicates your cage is too large and is allowing the erection to grow beyond normal stirrings into something stronger.
