Worn that and there's a major difference between the 2k's base rings and the 3k or 6k. The 2k's base rings were very smooth and round. In my opinion the 2k was the best device from AL for long term wear. I think AL should go retro and introduce a "Classic CB" based on the 2k.

The newer ones used a different plastic that had a different feel to them. It isn't that their rough, just stickier.
The 3k's problem was amplified by the hinge that caused irritation from the hinge rivet. You had to have lube in this area.
The 6K's problem is their a little more square where everything fits between the assembly. Because of the large surface contact area, and the stickiness, any movement seems to be amplified.

I have heard of very few people that never need base ring lube with the 3k or 6k, regardless of fit.

If you're talking about lube inside the cage area, I agree that with a proper fitting one you shouldn't need lube. The problem is; the AL's are "off the shelf" and it's a crap shoot you get a perfect fit.

Actually, my 2K was one of the very first. It was hand made by AL out of lucite rod and tubing. I'll get a picture on my site. I understand that the later plastic devices do cause friction problems. I think it is the plastic as well as the larger surface area of the base ring. For long term wear I imagine these off the shelf plastic cages are gong to be uncomfortable. I've also tried several silicone devices. While nice and soft, they also irritate me. To date, even a Chinese stainless steel cage is way more comfortable. My JB is "invisible" to me. I am rarely aware it is even there.
