Air travel with metal device

Post by MikeyLikes »

Hi all; I suspect this may have been discussed elsewhere on this forum, but when I searched for "travel" I didnt find any similar posts. So here's what my dilemma will be. In the winter, we will be traveling to Puerto Vallarta. I currently have a 6000s, and have a steel (MM) device on the way. Based on all the reviews I read so far, I suspect that it will be very comfortable. I also believe it will be concealable under swimwear, and as such, I will want to have it with me to wear for the duration of the vacation.

Clearly, I cannot travel while wearing it. I can wear the 6000s with a plastic lock on the travel days, and take the metal device with me. Question is, do I pack the MM device in my checked bag, or do I put it in my carry on? My hesitation with putting it in my checked bag is that there's a chance of the bag getting lost, as well as the routine inspections of the bag contents that the Mexican security likes to do. Having it in the carry on negates the possibility of loss, but ensures that the gate security will see it under the x-ray and may choose to also look at it ("What's this?").

Does anyone have any experience with this, or recommendations? Also, what about wearing a plastic device when going through those full body scanners? Has anyone done that, and care to share their experience(s)?

I would take the MM device in my checked bag if I was checking bags or in my carry on if I wasn't. I wouldn't wear anything during the travel time and put it on as soon as reasonable after arriving.

If you are worried about the full body scanners or the metal device I have read about an alternative. Go through security with the device off. After going through security, your KH gives you say 3 minuutes to go into the bathroom to put it back on. When on the plane a discrete feel could verify you have it on. This could be done with the metal and you wouldn't have to bring the plastic at all.

A penalty could be worked out ahead of time for taking too long to put it back on. No excuses!

I would think the cage placed in your KH's purse, asumming it's a she, would work the best. I may be off the mark here but with all the different things a woman carries in her purse I would think a metal device, broke down in seperate pieces, would go through easier than in a common carry on.

You tell them that they are specialized metal fittings. All they need to know is that it's not a weapon.

A doctor reports that his developmentally disabled son was harrassed and traumatized by the Detroit airport TSA screeners, who wanted to investigate the "puffiness" caused by his adult diaper. They man, who is described as having the mental capacity of a two-year-old, also lost a beloved toy (a plastic hammer) because the TSA claimed it could be used as a weapon. The family was on their way to Walt Disney World.

I travel with my MM JailBird. I put it in my carry on bag (sometimes the checked bag if I am checking). I have gone thru Detroit, Vegas, Atlanta, Miami, Key West, and Charlotte with no problems or questions.

I also have a 6000s and I don't think I would try to go thru the scanners with it on. Like Tom provided in his post about Detroit, you just never know what they will decided to "check out" on any given day. Why put yourself thru that!

If you must wear it during the flight, just put it on after you clear TSA.
Good luck!

On those occasions that I've travelled with my SH, I've checked it. Don't need a curious TSA agent pulling it out for all the others in line to see...

Yeah; I reckon I'll be checking it, and not wearing even my CB-6Ks for the flight. We will be travelling with my wife's family, so definately not a good time to be pulled aside, or have said item pulled out of carry-on for all to see.
