Having tried all types of non one piece rings, a one piece ring is the best. Hinged rings will rub you raw, even with the rubber tubing. The tubing gives you two spots at each end to rub your scrotum. I tried two of them and for long term wear, they were not comfortable at all. The CB type will take you a few minutes to put on and there are two many parts to deal with.

If having an erection is the problem, it does not matter what kind of ring you use because you are not going to be able to put the cage part on until your erection goes away. I do not see how different rings will make a difference since it is the cage part that is the problem, not the ring. I can put a ring around my balls when erect by just putting it around my balls with my penis outside of it. When my penis goes down, I tuck it in under the ring and put the cage on. If you use an open design ring odds are that you will not be able to close the ring over your balls and erect penis anyway. If you can, the ring is too large.

Given that you cannot lock up in any type of device, changing ring types is not going to matter.

I've seen multiple people act like split rings were torture devices, but that is NOT my experience. I've been wearing a split ring with a hinge for months now. In general there is very little if any pinching from the ring. I get more pinches from the lock than from the split ring. Almost all of the split rings I've seen come with a piece of tubing to cover the hinge.

You can pick up some cages from China for very cheap if you would like to try it. The cage I'm wearing is very comfortable. Also the bars on this cage run around the penis, so it can be easily adjusted to the perfect fit. Just use a set of pliers and squeeze the bars a little closer. Here's what I am currently wearing. I've worn it without release for multiple weeks.

It's taking it off when erect that's my problem. My wife likes to get me really worked up in the cage, then decide if she's going to let me out for more or leave me in to suffer. In just 4 months she's gone from thinking this whole thing is very weird and afraid to do anything to loving seeing me bulging through every part of my contender.

What if I wrapped the hinge with a piece of waterproof medical tape? Wouldn't that eliminate any pinching?
A properly designed/machined hinge shouldn't be too uncomfortable, and I have an image in my head of how it could/should be done.
Good point. The hinges on the cheap Chinese knock-offs have brought me tears (and not joyful ones). But a finely designed and machined hinge may be fine.

Be wary of the rubber/poly wrappings of the hinge joints. They tend to rub and chaff, leaving the skin raw. You can lubricate them, but when it runs dry, the irritation comes back with a vengeance.

I'm in the same boat with the same cage as the OP. The ring is not coming off once erect. My wife even tried to outsmart it last time by trying to remove it before we did anything. It was a failed attempt as once she grabbed it with the key and said "let's get this off before you get too excited, made me excited and the ring stayed on. It's not too big an issue as you can rotate it around. It does kinda slow the cumming for me and feels more like a ruined than I would like. She didn't really care though. She enjoyed herself.
