I have little experience with plugs. I only recently bought a "beginners" plug. Good thing I started small because it is still a "stretch" to get the wide part in and back out. We used to have this issue until I asked MrsL if she was inserting the plug past the "bulb" at the base. She was not. Now, we don't have this issue. I have gone 2.5 hours so far and she keeps hinting at longer times...

I think it partly depends on the size and design of the plug- a thinner/smaller plug with a gradual taper on both sides of the 'wide' part is going to be more difficult to retain than a thicker, bulgier plug that does not have much taper on the side connected to the [comparatively] thinner shaft.

A 'beginner's' plug, which is slim and features gradual tapers on both sides of the wide(r) part is not going to be easy to retain, especially when used with an abundance of lube. You probably shouldn't expect to be able to retain it. It is only meant to accustom you to the sensation and teach you how to relax for insertion...after you get used to it, you can gradually move to bigger sizes that are more retainable.
