I've worn a CB6000s for a long time and trust me, don't rush into dropping sizes. Get use to wearing it 24/7 and your body will adjust to this new thing clamped around your most private part.

I wore the largest A-ring for quite sometime before I felt it was time to move down in size. The same went for closing in on the gap size between the ring and the cage.

I think it depends on just how purple. I have seen pictures of purple balls that I would not be comfortable with. A deep reddish / purple on the other hand doesn't bother me. I use a pretty small ring with a pretty small gap and rarely get more than a deep pinkish / red. Again, I wouldn't be happy with purple.

When this happens do they feel cold? I know that is one of the indicators to look out for.

No they were not cold and they were not that deep purple or blue, they were a reddish purple. They were probably fine but would rather be safe than sorry.
