I was surprised to see the second definition of the word of the day "mortify" - and thought that some of you might get a kick out of it.
PRONUNCIATION: (MOR-tuh-fy)
MEANING: verb tr.:
1. To humiliate, shame, or embarrass.
2. To discipline (one's body) by self-denial, self-inflicted suffering, etc.

The definition of 'shame'/'embarrassment' was not extended to it until the latter middle ages, and that of 'discipline' (in the sense of deadening the flesh) was applied some time after that.
In the medical community it is still used in its original sense, as in tissue which has become dead such as by gangrene is "mortified".
